Beneficiaries of Aklan OFWs to learn "fitter" ways to spend remittances

Kalibo, Aklan (19 November) -- Beneficiaries of Aklan's thousands of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) will be taught here Nov. 20 on how to spend or use wisely the hard-earned money sent by their loved ones working abroad through a Financial Learning Campaign.

The Financial Learning Campaign will be spearheaded by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) with the support of other key government agencies like the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the Department of Agriculture (DA).

The activity, which will be held at the ACP Centerpoint in Kalibo, expects more than a hundred participants who are either wives, parents, brothers, sisters and other relatives of OFWs.

According to Leonora Templonuevo, Deputy Director of BSP-Kalibo Branch, some of the topics to be taken up include Importance of Remittances, Significance of Financial Planning, Different Types of Investment Instruments, Remittances and Investment Protection Tips, which will be taken up by Elizabeth D. Alarilla, Bank Officer III of the Department of Economic Statistics, BSP; Investment/Business Options for Micro-Enterprises, Registration Requirements for Micro-Enterprises, which will be discussed by DTI-Aklan Provincial Director Diosdado P. Cadena, Jr; and Agri-Business Opportunities for Micro-Enterprises, by Ryan Sastre, Agricultural Technologist of DA-Aklan.

Participants will also get to hear a testimony of a successful OFW Microentrepreneur, which will be delivered by Elbert I. Sayco, owner of a family-owned grocery store.

A video presentation entitled "Paghahanda Para Sa Kinabukasan" will also be shown to participants. (PIA)
