E Visayas LGEs vote for Palawan Underground River as one of new seven wonders of nature

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, July 18 (PIA) -– Local government executives across Eastern Visayas, altogether voted for Palawan Underground River as one of the seven (7) New Wonders of Nature.

The voting through text messaging was done at the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Tapatan Forum which was held on July 14 at the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 8 Teachers Training Center at Candahug, Palo, Leyte.

DILG Undersecretary Austere Panadero who represented Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo asked the Governors, City and Municipal Mayor present if they have cell phones. He then asked them to encode PPUR and send to 2861.

"You have just voted for Palawan Underground River to be proclaimed as one of the New Wonders of Nature," Usec Panadero to the Eastern Visayas local chief executives, as he encouraged them to urge their friends, employees, relatives and their constituents to do the same.

It will be a great pride of the Philippines if Palawan Underground River will win, Usec Panadero said.

President Benigno S. Aquino III has issued Proclamation 182 declaring a national and international promotion campaign for the Puerto Princesa Underground River as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.

The 8.2 kilometer long Puerto Princesa Underground River, formed 30 million years ago, is considered the longest underground river in the world, with unique and outstanding scientific, biological and geological features that merited its being recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1999 and being declared as a National Geological Monument in 2003.

Inclusion in the 28 Official Finalist Candidates have made the Puerto Princesa Underground River world-renowned and is starting to attract international interest that will benefit the Philippine tourism industry as a whole with its synergistic effects.

As a matter of national pride and patriotism, Filipinos should be made aware and encouraged to support the campaign for the inclusion of the Puerto Princesa Underground River as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the President stated. (PIA8)
