Iloilo City (13 August) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo instructed the Department of Public Works and Highways here to fast-track construction/repair works of vital infrastructure projects by end of 2009.

This was disclosed by Director Rolando Asis of the DPWH 6 in an interview by the Philippine Information Agency at the Iloilo Airport in time with President Arroyo's visit to inspect the implementation of the flood control program, and to lead the groundbreaking program for the construction of Nichols Bridge in Alimodian, Iloilo.

Director Asis emphasized that the President's instruction refers to all SONA infra-commitments, and other infra projects implemented in Western Visayas.

He said that Nichols Bridge is under the urgent bridges for rural development program with a budget of P166.45 million.

For the flood control program, Director Asis disclosed that the first package of the project is already 80% complete, and package 2 which involves the improvement of Iloilo River is now 90 percent complete, and "hopefully it will be operational by end of 2009".

When asked on the importance of the infrastructure to the economy, Director Asis said "these projects when completed would not only improve accessibility to major tourist areas in the region but will also improve the region's socio-economic condition, for it will open employment and investment opportunities".
