LGUs urged to support 2008 NDPR Week celebration

Iloilo City (4 July) -- The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) urged all local chief executives to undertake fitting activities to mark the significance of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) week celebration this year.

Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 361, s. 2002, the 3rd week of July is declared as NDPR Week in the country which culminates on July 23 each year.

Based on DILG the Memorandum Circular No. 2008-87 signed by USEC Austere Panadero, some of the suggested activities for this year’s celebration include conduct of seminars and symposia and other similar fora on disability-related laws for local government officials and employees and the general public, reading of pastoral letter relative to the celebration, inclusion of PWD-related information in the flag raising ceremonies, and broadcast in local media and display of streamers in provincial capitols and city or municipal halls with the theme.

Also included among the suggested activities is the holding of other PWD related activities such as essay-writing, poster-making and slogan, medical and dental mission for PWDs, photo exhibits on successful PWDs, sports events-walkathon/wheelathon, cultural show, jobs fair, livelihood training for PWDs and market week for PWDs.

All DILG Regional Directors were also directed to extend appropriate support to the celebration. Likewise, the department’s Regional PWD Coordinator was tasked to coordinate with the Regional Council for the Welfare of the Disabled Persons (RCWDP) relative to the celebration.

With the theme "Kapag May Access, May Success", this year’s celebration emphasizes the importance of providing accessibility to persons with disabilities not only through facilities but also through services, employment opportunities, and participation to public and private programs and projects.

Also, period 2003 to 2012 has been declared via Proclamation No. 240 as the Philippine Decade of Persons with Disabilities that mandates all heads of Departments, Chief of Bureaus, Offices and Agencies and Instrumentalities including officials of Local Governments to implement plans, programs and activities geared towards the development of persons with disabilities.
