ILOILO CITY, May 20 (PIA6) - - The members of the Iloilo Provincial Nutrition Committee are set to visit municipalities to validate their entries for this year’s Search for Oustanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) in the province.

Presidential Decree No. 1569 mandates the deployment of one BNS in every barangay in the country to monitor the nutritional status of children and to deliver nutrition services and other related activities.

Provincial Health Office Assistant Chief Dr. Maria Socorro Colmanares-Quinon said that the validation will start on May 26 until 28, 2014.

There are five municipalities that have submitted their entries for evaluation. These are Sara, Cabatuan, New Lucena, Tubungan and Tigbauan.

In validating the performance of the BNS, Quinon said evaluators will be guided by the following criteria: program management (40 points); site visitation (30 points); validation of weights of sample presschoolers (20 points); and additional points (10 points).

For the site visitation, evaluators will be visiting nutrition or nutrition related projects initiated by or participated in by the BNS in the barangay. The project must be implemented along the lines of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition Impact Programs.

This year’s winner will represent the province in the regional search and will be recognized during the culmination activity of the Nutrition Month this July.

Currently, there are around 1,799 BNS deployed in the different barangays of the province. (JCM/LAF/PIA6)
