THE GLOW, SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER 1989    PAGE 4 hVit o rial For Better or For Worse? Drugs were discovered primarily as a cornerstone of man's conquest for diseases but today many of these drugs have the unfortunate tendency to be equated with a comparative handful which are involved in abuse and addiction. Hippocrates, the ancient Greek "Father of Medicine" introduced opium from the poppy to kill pain, allay anxiety and produce sleep. Morphine was also discovered as a pain killing drug or analgesic while cocaine was used as anaesthetic. Today, however these drugs were not only meant to alleviate pain or allay anxiety but as a moral booster for some psychological defects or just as a pleasurable way of escaping life's pressures. The users do not knowthat the psychological effect such as a feeling of pleasure or a means of avoiding discomfort is unfortunately only short-lived often leaving the individual feeling worse than he did initially and leading to a craving for more supplies of the drug. In some cases, the dose necessary to produce the same intensity of effect often increases rapidly with further use of the drug. Thus, leading to drug abuse or the persistent or sporadic excessive drug use inconsistent with or unrelated to acceptable medical practice. Drug abuse is a social problem, a menace that should be eradicated for it is not what drugs are for. The government is now doing its part in protecting the most vulnerable-the young-by legal means. Why don't you do your part? It is high time now to realize the better side of the coin-Drugs are meant to let people live not to let them die cowards. FANCUBELA Head, English Department Vocational School Administrator SEPTEMBER -DECEMBER 1989 1 COVika by Jay Plueyo The carnival fair during the town fiesta was a welcome treat though I might say its presence is too short to serve as a leisure activity for the people most especialy the younger citizens of the town. I'm sure a good sports program in the community can take its place. It would be the best leisure activity where the youth can spend their time and energy. It would be much better than drug trafficking! I should like to commend the laudable projects of our Municipal Mayor, Hon. Fidel Ahumada and the membes of the Sangguniang Bayan. The construction of roads and school buildings in the community is highly commendable. Congratulations for a job well done! Talking of roads - have you noticed the cemented roads if we may still call them pavement in many streets in the town most especially Serrano, San Agustin and Aragon Streets? These streets were constructed way back in the late 50's And early 60's and we 6e now in the 90's. F or a score and a decade, no improvement nor maintenance was ever done. A truck load or two of gravel and sand are not enough. Will it be too much for us to ask for a reconstruction of these? We are looking forward to the completion of the recreational hall behind the Rural Health Center. I hope it will really serve its purpose of providing the necessary recreational facilities for both the young and the old in the town. Aesthetically speaking, will the ILECO I office behind the Puericulture Center add glamour and beauty to our plaza or otherwise? The birth of a new organization in town, Cabatuan 2000 composed of dynamic and young professionals in town and headed by Mr. Abraham Guidoriagao is a vEKy good sign of community involvement. I hope and pray it won't die a natural death. Good luck[ Have you noticed bill boards in almost all barangays in town? Names of barangay officials are written in each of them. At least we'll know who's making the best for their respective barangays. CAMPUS SPEAK by Ruby Umadhay Happy New Year Everyone! Welcome to the last decade of the 19th century. What has this year in store for us? Will it be a better year for everyone? Reminiscing 1989, we can't help thinking of the many glorious events that happened in our school. We garnered a lot of laurels in the different fields of endeavor participated in by our school. We won in both Provincial and Regional levels of FFP/FAHP Seminar Workshops. We also brought the bacon home when our students attended the Regional Secondary Schools Press Conference in Bacolod City. In the same manner that we also did it in Girl Scouting when Madonna Palmes won the "Model Girl Scout" title. What more can we ask for? Dear teachers, Thank you for the guidance. To our administrative staff, our deep appreciation of your support. We also played host to both local and international visitors. Remember the DAR seminar and the visit of the Japanese Red Cross members? We did play our role very well then! Kudos to the working committees. The school through its different departments and organizations sponsored several programs and convocations in school. This is just one way of giving us learning outside the four walls of the classroom. But did we ever show our appreciation? I We observed Drug Abuse Prevention Week late last year and we were surprised of the all out support of the students through their participation in slogan and poster-slogan contests. Did you really mean what you wrote in your slogans? The administration is trying its best to give us, students the best education we can ever have in our lives by providing us the necessary reading materials in the library as well as building more classrooms for us. Let me then appeal to you my fellow students - Let us also do our share by making the most of them by reading and preserving them for the next generation. The long list of failing/problem students in the bulletin board makes me wonder how much the government is lossing for each of them. Are these the kind of students the government is spending its money for? ••. Talking of values, Values Education being taught in the first year should be strong enough to erase the already ingrained negative values and attitudes of many of our students. Pride, prejudice and super superiority complex are among the many. 1? The Glow, September-December 1989.
