THE GLOW, SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER 1989    PAGE 5 I SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 1989 THE GLOW (6)_1 Towards an Abundant Life Through Responsible Parenthood by: Jeanie Rose Leysa The Role of FFP for Manpower and Industrialization ESSAYS by: Ernielito Canega I'm a youthful lady of premarital age, determined to be a wife and a mother someday. Getting married and bearing children is a basic human right but it carries with it corresponding responsibilities. Foremost among these is . to adhere religiously to the program and policies of the government. While still a student, I have to enrich my knowledge in Population Education so that when the time comes for me to embark on marital life, I will be a responsible parent. I have to internalize the fact that responsible parenthood is the key to abundant life, a quality life for every Filipino and every citizen of the world. Responsible parenthood requires me to delay my marriage until I reach the age of 25 to reduce incidence of childbirths. During my marital life, I have to observe family planning by practicing birth control according to my cultural and religious convictions. I have to space my childbirths and limit my children to two to effect replacement fertility. All these I have to do to help check the rapid population growth of our country. Having a largely youthful population, our country cannot ignore the fact that the decision of todays youth on marriage and child bearing will It is said that a strong family will lead to a strong community. A strong comunity is composed of a family or group of families united in purpose. It is important that families should be strong in order to build a much stronger community. Through proper nutrition it is easy for the members of the family to do their duties at home and further more for the community. Family members when nourished properly will build a strong family in the sense that, they will no longer suffer from nutrition problem. Economically speaking, nutrition is very advantageous to us. In our daily activities, it is but natural for us to exert efforts to do our determine to a large extent its population growth for the years to come. I subscribe to the hypothesis that a fall in fertility can facilitate the achievement of some of the macro-economic objectives of our government. Fertility decline will increase our Gross National Product and deepen our savings rate. The savings rate tends to be higher when income per capita is higher. Given the low level of mortality at present, a fall in the birth rate will mean a lower dependency rate, that is, the ratio of dependents to the working age population will fall. As a consequence, the savings rate will tend to rise because a smaller proportion of income will have to be devoted for the consumption needs of the dependents. Human capital formation in terms of higher education, better training and others maybe faster with lower fertility. The government will be in a better position to spend more resources per child, if growth in the number of school aged children were slower. Furthermore, it has been shown that children from families with fewer children tend to have better education and greater academic achievement on the average. These children also tend to be healthier. tasks. If ever we are not well-nourished, we couldn't do our work properly, thus, when it comes to manual work or even mental work you only finish a small part of it. If we are nourished correctly we could earn money enough for the entire members of the family. Proper nutrition affects us mentally. For example a person can work well mentally if he is well nourished. Like us students, we can achieve better in class if we are mentally and physically healthy. A strong family can be achieved through physically, mentally and spiritually healthy members of the family brought about by proper nutrition. A reduction of fertility will facilitate efforts to reduce poverty. Most families, depend on labor earnings as the source of income. Hence, to reduce poverty it is important for the real wage rate to rise overtime. Wage rate will tend to rise when labor demand grows faster than labor supply. A fall in fertility will tend to slow down the growth of labor supply in the long run. Above all, many types of public ?xpenditures must be increased as population grows. Otherwise, it would mean a fall in quality if per capita expenditures for public services were allowed to fall. Recognizing these consequences of a rapid population growth we have to view population in its entirety - as a resource, as a constraint, as a consequence, as a determinant and as an integral element of life. We must plan and work to bring about a global society that is secure and a viable. One in which individuals can develop their full potentials free from capricious inequalities of development and threats of environmental degradation. This should be done without violating the dignity and freedom of the human person and giving all people the knowledge and the means to bring forth only the children for whom they can provide the fullest opportunities for growth and quality life. This we can do through responsible parenthood. PRODUCTS FROM ... (From page 8) Second, concentrated loko-loko - extract. If then, the Philippines should make it on top of other small nation. But despite the fact that we are endowed with a great number of minerals, sea and land supply, we remain to be stagnant. One step towards development is to adopt the saying, "Call a spade a spade and let the spade like it." We must recognize our faults and weaknesses as members of FFP and glance at the achievements of other members and learn through them. We the members of the FFP also have the opportunity to become a nation builder. 'me were first trained by our teachers in school vocationaly according to our interest. In the future we can either be carpenters, tailors, craftsmen or agriculturists. The training we get in school is a minimum investment which we can use later in our job and it can help in the development of manpower and industrialization of our country. Many government programs were conducted for the people for development of manpower and industrialization such as youth development through the National Manpower and Youth Council. The introduction to new farming techniques of the Department of Agriculture and Department of Economic and Natural Resources and many more. With self-determination, good values and attitudes, little capital and government support, the Philippines may soon become an industrialized country. hope of our fatherland and so we are concerned about this drug abuse problem. Drug abuse is risky. Everybody is concerned about this drug abuse problem, but as a student, I am playing an important role in the prevention and control of drugs. As a student who is looking at the bright future of my life, I will do my best to stay away from these harmful drugs. I will discipline myself by not turning over my life to the drug world. I will also try my very best to appeal to the different sectors of our government to help prevent and control drug abuse. I will serve as a good example for the youths today.
