The English department of the school observed Valentine's Day on February 14 with a series of academic contests and the coronation of the King and the Queen of Hearts '97. The contests served as the culminating activities of the department for the school year 1996-1997. In the morning of February 14, contests in essay writing, boggle, scrabble, squabble, and crossword puzzle were held. The coronation program highlighting the observance of Hearts' Day was held at the school stage, starting at 1:00 p.m. During the program, the officers of the English Club were presented. Contests in spelling and vocabulary were staged. The IV-Amethyst students made a choral interpretation of "The Daffodils." The IV-Diamond students, also trained by Miss Belen Huyo, rendered a choral interpretation of "How Do I Love Thee?" In between the numbers in the coronation program, there were raffles. Consolation and major prizes were awarded to the winners. The highlight of February Affair'97 was the corn. ation of the King and Queen of Hearts '97. The holders beauty olders of the beau title were chosen through a lottery, upon the recommendation of the English teachers. Chosen King of Hearts '97 was Romeo Camen Jr., a senior student. The Queen of Hearts '97 was his classmate, Winnie Rose Estimar. The two were jointly proclaimed by Mr. Joel B. Ton-non, an alumnus of the school belonging to Class '89 and anchorman of DYFM Bombo-Radyo, King of Hearts '97 was crowned by Jonathan Menchavez, King of Hearts '94 who is a senior student. He was assisted by Mr. Rey B. Vencer, the school administrator. Queen of Hearts '97 was crowned by Joan Taburno, Queen of Hearts '94 who is a senior student. She was assisted by Mrs. Cecilia M. Ortega, a resident COA auditor of CNCHS. Aside from their crown and scepter, the two title holders were awarded trophies and cash awards. Also during the program, the winners -in the academic contests were announced and given medals as prizes. Dennis Joseph Pueyo of IV-A showed his superiority is scrabble contest. Jorge Aborde of 111-A was the judges' choice for the much-coveted plum in essay-writing contest. Florife Rabago, III-Beige, bested other contestants in squabble contest. Michelle Sotelo of IV-A dominated the boggle contest. Allan Janapon of 111-A lorded them over in crossword puzzle contest. The president of the English Club, Rieza Velarde of IV-A grabbed the gold medal in spelling contest. The tandem of Riman Talite and Zosimo Miravite Jr., both of III-A, asserted their superiority in vocabulary contest. The English department of the school is headed by Mrs. Nenita G. Pueyo. Other English teachers are Miss Ninfa Dio, Mrs. Santiaga Mae M. Maquilado, Miss Josefina Sumagaysay, Mrs. Rosalio O. Hualde, Miss Lorlyn Ortega (substitute), Mrs. Eppie M. Talamor, Mrs. Ofelia A. Tobias, Mrs. Ofelia P. Adelantar, Miss Consuelo Piecio, and Mr. Victor S. Maroma. Five students of the school won top honors during the 20th Joint Regional FFP­FAHP Work Conference held in Panay State Polytechnic College in Mambusao, Capiz on February 28-30. In the contests sponsored by the Future Farmers of the Philippines (FFP), Beulah Grace Portillo, IV-A, won the gold medal in faun planning and budget contest. Nestor Diaz, IV-A, placed second in fertilizer com­putation contest. Oil the side of the Future Agricultural Homemakers of the Philippines (FAHP), Jinky Silorio, IV-Amethyst, got the judges' nod for the gold medal in vocal solo contest. Jorge Aborde, III-A, was elected press relations officer of the regional organization of FAHP. Rieza Velarde and Mary Can Sta. Rufina, both of IV-A, were elevated to Re­gional Homemakers Degree. During the regional conference, Mrs. Barbara C. Cambronero, adviser of the CNCHS FAHP, was awarded as the Most Outstanding Adviser in Region VI for the school year 1995-1996. The school chapter of the FAHP was adjudged the Most Out­standing School Chapter for the school year 1995-1996. The honors earned by the school chap­ter of the FAHP were duplicated by the school chapter of FFP. The CNCHS FFP was declared as the Most Outstanding FFP Chap­ter in Region VI for the school year 1995­1996. It was also named as the Most Out­standing UP Chapter in Income-Generating Project for the school year 1995-1996. The adviser of the school chapter of FFP is Mr. Domingo Clarito Jr. In the provincial level for the work con­ference held in Concepcion Polytechnic Col­lege, Concepcion, Iloilo on November 7-8, 1996 several students of the school gave a name to CNCHS. On the FAHP side, Jinky Silorio copped the gold medal in vocal solo contest. The tandem of Jinky Silorio and Julian Guardamano, 111-A, placed fourth in baking butter cake contest. So with Danny John Robles in cooking main dish. Both Julian Guardamano and Mary Can Sta. Rufina placed seventh in poster-slogan and corsage-making contests, respectively. FFP contestants also won honors. Marivic Casianan, I-A, grabbed the silver medal in English declamation contest. Oliver Pallada, IV-A, ranked second in trouble shooting. His classmate Nestor Diaz came out fourth in poster-slogan contest.
