For the first time, Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School joined KASADYAHAN, an annual merry-making contest sponsored by DINAGYANG Foundation Inc. The contest was held on January 18 in Iloilo City. Every year Iloilo City observes DINAGYANG, an Ati-Ati tribe contest which has gained national and international fame. The day before, the KASADYAHAN is held as a prelude to a main event. Both contests are offered in honor of Sto. Nino, the Patron Saint of Iloilo City, whose feast is observed every third Sunday of January. Named "TRIBU KABATUHAN," the entry of the school was composed of 80 members, all students of the school. The presentation of the tribe had a touch of the history and culture of Cabatuan. The school's contesting tribe partly portrayed the legend of the town. The major portion of the presentation focused on the superstitious beliefs and an ancient paganistic practice of the Cabatuananons. The practice involved the hiring of the services of the "babaylan" or quack doctor to cure ailments and diseases. More often than not, the, pntlent did not get cured permanently. The patient, if "cured", gets a temporary relief only. The presentation of the tribe moralized by telling the spectators that permanent relief of one's ailment or disease can be obtained only from God, through Sto. Nino. To help the school defray the expenses for its participation in Kasadyahan '97, the municipal government headed by Mayor Eliseo C. Tobias contributed P10,000.00. The amount was augmented by Cong. Licurgo P. Tirador who chipped in another P10,000.00 The neophyte tribe which placed fourth during the contest was trained by Gary Sentin, a local choreographer. He was assisted by Mrs. Evelina R:--Artieda, head of the PEHM department and writer of the script of the presentation, and Mrs. Gracia P. Baylor, a PEHM teacher of the school.
