( MARCH 1997 -/4 6 L OW)a CAT-1 unit undergoes evaluation CNCHS improves NSAT performance There is a slight improvement in the perform­ance of Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School in the National Secondary Assessment Test (NSAT) given on September 27, 1996. This was disclosed by Miss Belen Huyo, sen­ior guidance counselor of the school, during an interview with her. NSAT covers four subject areas: Math, Sci­ence, English, Filipino. According to Miss Huyo, the percentage of passing in Math is 77.58, com­pared to last year's 76. In Science, the passing percentage is 81.32, as against 79 last year. It is in English where the school remarkbly improved. Its passing percentage is 90.73 while last year it was only 83. Filipino has the passing percentage of 88.79, compared to 92 last year. As regards the mean, English topped other subject areas with a mean of 31.05. Math fol­lowed with 30.29 then Science with 28.69 and Filipino with 14.66. The National Secondary Assessment Test re­placed the National College Entrance Examination (NCEE). It is given annually to all fourth year high school students both in public and private schools all over the country. It aims to evaluate the performance of graduating students in Math, Science, English, and Filipino. The NSAT result has bearing on the grades of the examinees in the four subject areas covered by the test. For every subject area, twenty percent of the NSAT rating will be added to 80 percent of the grade obtained in schol to determine the final grade of the student in that particular subject area. Alumna donates books A member of Class '76 donated recently a complete and brand-new set of Encyclope­dia Britanica. Mrs. Charito Castellano-Lloren, accom­panied by her husband Rafael, personally turned over her book donation to her Alma Mater. Mr. Rodrigo Tacay, head of the Sci­ence department of the school, received the donation in behalf of CNCHS. The turn-over ceremony was witnessed by Mrs. Julia A. Caspe, a Science teacher of the school, and the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Lloren, Charisse. The former Charito Castellano of Barangay Tiring is presently employed as a staff nurse in the nursery department of a private hospital in Texas, United States of America. Her husband is an insurance agent. The couple have three children: Charisse, a Grade 8 student; Charlotte, in Grade 6; and Ralph Kenneth, in Grade 3. The Castellano-!.oreet. family resides in 2207 East 20th Street, Mission, Texas, U.S.A. The Citizen Army Training (CAT-1) unit of the school underwent an administrative and tacti­cal inspection on February 7. The evaluation cer­emonies started at 8:00 a.m. Tasked to evaluate the CAT-I unit of the school was a team headed by Master Sergeant Rolando Dupit. Other members of the team were Second Lieutenant Zoilo Dalde, Second Lieuten­ant Albert Galan, Second Lieutenant Eduardo Carillo, and Constable First Class Gerry Lascofia. During the evaluation, Second Lieutenant Dalde took charge of the theoretical examination. Second Lieutenant Galan was responsible for pla­toon drill and map reading. Second Lieutenant Carillo evaluated the squad drill and military cour­tesy and discipline. Constable first class Lascofia handled the M16 rifle. The annual administrative and tactical inspec­tion has five-fold purposes. Primarily it aims to determine the existing conditions in the CAT-I units regarding administrative, personnel, facilities, train­ing aids and equipment. It also aims to look into the relationship between the CAT-I unit, the school administration, the parents of the cadets/cadettes and the community with the view of attaining bet­ter rapport and cooperation. Furthermore, it aims to gather data and in­formation that may be needed by the headquarters in initiating remedial measures on the defense and The Social Studies department of the school, the Knights of Columbus Council 6048 in Cabatuan, Iloilo and the Jose Ma. Lopez Vito Jr., Assembly of the fourth degree of the Knights of Columbus based in Jaro, Iloilo City jointly sponsored a photo-exhibit and a symposium on March 3-4. The two-day photo-exhibit, displayed in Room 37 of Mrs. Consejo C. Gonzaga, focused on the history and culture of Western Visayas. The viewing of the exhibit was done during the Social Studies classes of students or during their vacant periods so as not to disrupt classes. On March 4, the symposium, also on the same topic as that of the exhibit opened with a short program in the extension of the Shop building of the school at 8:00 a.m. Mr. Ruperto Clarito, Grand Knight of Council 6048 of the Knights of Columbus in Cabatuan and Social Studies teacher of the school, delivered his welcome remarks in behalf of the local council of the Knights of Columbus. Mayor Eliseo C. Tobias welcomed the guests in behalf of the Municipality of Cabatuan. In behalf of the host school, Mr. Rey B. Vencer, the school administrator, gave his words of welcome. During the opening program, the Jose Ma. Lopez Vito Jr., rewards for commendable and exemplary perform­ance. Aside from this, it seeks to ascertain the de­gree of training attained by the cadet corps and determine the morale of CAT-I units personnel and cadets/cadettes. Finally its purpose is to de­termine the best CAT-I units within the area of supervision and responsibility for the purpose of recognizing exemplary performance and present­ing awards in order to develop wholesome com­petitive spirit among the CAT-1 cadets/cadettes and motivate them to aspire for recognition and attain the desirable standard of training. For the past two years, the evaluation of the CAT-I units was suspended. But before the sus­pension, the CAT-I unit of the school was ad­judged the best unit in Central Western Iloilo for eight consecutive years. Under the present set-up, all CAT-I units in the third congressional district of Iloilo will be ranked according to their performance during the administrative and tactical inspection. The towns of Bingawan, Calinog, Lambunao, Janivay, Badiangan, Mina, Pototan, Cabatuan, and Maasin compose the third congressional district of Iloilo. The CAT-I unit of CNCHS is headed by Mr. Lope B. Apelo Jr. The corps commander this year is Cadet Colonel Noel Tolentino Jr. Assembly of the Knights of Columbus, through its representatives, presented to Mayor Tobias and Mr. Vencer calendars portraying the Filipino revolutionary leaders during the Spanish regime. Two resource speakers spoke during the symposium which was attended by fourth year students only. Sir Knight Juan Garin, former member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Iloilo spoke on "The Knights of Columbus and Culture". A local historian, writer, and practicing lawyer Sir Knight Rex Salvilla discussed the topic "History and Culture of Western Visayas." An open forum followed after the talks of the resource speaker.
