10 -74 C1 LOW MARCH 1997 ) DECSRO conducts achievement test The Regional Office of the Department of Education, Culture, and Sports conducted on March 5 an achievement test on first, second, and third year students of the school. Mrs. Victy A. Carbon, an educational supervisor of the DECS Regional Office, headed the team that conducted the achieve­ment test. Other members of the team were Miss Zenaida Silviderio, a teacher of Jaro High School; Mr. Eduardo Naldoza, a teacher of Sta. Barbara National Comprehensive High School; and Mrs. Dulia Ong, a teacher ofJalandoni Memorial High School in Lapuz, La Paz, Iloilo City. Miss Silviderio conducted the test on first year students, Mr. Naldoza on second year students, and Mrs. Ong on third year students. Only 40 examinees for every curricu­lum year were allowed to take the test. The top three students in each section of the cur­riculum year composed the examinees for that curriculum year. Two Math rooms and one English room were used as examination rooms. Ruben L. de la Rosa, an alumnus of the school belonging to Class '70, died of heart attack in Texas, United States of America on January 3, 1997. He was 46 years old. The tragic news was relayed to Mr. Rey B. Vencer, the school administrator, by Engr. Martin L. de la Rosa Jr., the eldest brother of the deceased. According to Engr. de la Rosa, his younger brother Ruben had a massive heart attack on January 1, 1997. Three days after, he succumbed to the disease. Up to his death, the late Ruben had been working with the American Air Lines. He is survived by his wife Gertrude, son Ruben Jr. who is 15 years old, and daughter Rose Ann, 13 years old. He is also survived by his mother, the former Rosario Larios, brothers Martin Jr., Alex, and Efren, sisters Nymphs and Nenette. During his lifetime, the late Ruben de la Rosa had been a benefactor not only to his Altna Mater, the Cabatuan National Com­prehensive High School, but also to his home­town Cabatuan. As an advocate of sports, he had extended substantial financial assistance to the athletes and players of Cabatuan. He The achievement test was conducted during a period in all secondary schools, both public and private, in the region. It aimed to evaluate the achievement of students in all subject areas under the New Secondary Edu­cation Curriculum. These subjects are Eng­lish, Filipino, Social Studies, Values Educa­tion, Mathematics, Science and Technology, and Physical Education, Health and Music (PERM). It should be noted that the Secondary Education Development Program launched by DECS during the school year 1990-1991 is now on its seventh year of implementa­tion. With its launching, the New Secondary Education Curriculum was adopted. One fea­ture of the new curriculum is the introduc­tion of new subjects such as Values Educa­tion and Technology and Home Economics (THE). The achievement test given on March 5 was facilitated by the Guidance Office of the school staffed by Miss Belen Huyo, Mrs. Milagros C. Azin, and Mrs. Nerissa T. Apelot. had donated athletic uniforms and sports equipment to the youthful sports participants in town. As a tribute to his deceased younger brother, Engr. Martin L. de la Rosa Jr. will give his annual cash awards this year to the honor graduates, in memory of his dead brother. It is to be noted that in 1978 Engr. de la Rosa started the giving of cash awards to the class valedictorian and salutatorian only. Later, he deemed it wise to give also cash awards to the 10 other honor graduates. Since then, he has institutionalized the giving of cash awards to all the honor graduates of CNCHS. In 1987, Engr. de la Rosa started giving a cash award of P1,000.00 and a plaque of recognition to the "Most Outstanding Teacher" of the school during the school year. The awards are now on their 11th year of implementation. Engr. Martin L. de la Rosa Jr. graduated valedictorian from then Cabatuan High School in 1957. Group donates musical instruments Nikkei Jin-Kai Inc., a Japan-Philippines Volunteer Association based in Lot 17, Block 7 of Bankers Village in Jaro, Iloilo City donated musical instruments to Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School on January 13, 1997. Donated were 14 English fingering recorders itemized as follows: four recorders with Yamaha brand (B); one recorder with Zen-On brand (B); nine recorders with Aulos brand (E). The donated musical instruments are now being used by the CNCHS band. The donation was released to the school through the representation of Clint Montefrio, a first year student of the school. He is the eldest child of retired Army serviceman Benjamin Montefrio and the former Adelita Coniza. Both of his parents are alumni of the school. His father belongs to Class '72 while his mother is a member of Class'77. His mother has Japanese blood, having been born to a Japanese woman. Kenshu Sasaki, director for Panay activity of Nikkei Jin-Kai Inc., effected the release to the school of the 14 English fingering recorders. "With sincerest thanks and grateful appreciation, we in Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School accept the donation of Nikkei Jin-Kai Inc.," Mr. Rey B. Vencer, the school administrator said. SG approves 2 resolutions The Student Government recently passed two resolutions separately approved during two regular sessions. Resolution number one, series of 1997, seeks to ask authority from the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the school to increase the Student Government membership fee from P5.00 to P10.00. Every student of the school is a member of the Student Government. The resolution, sponsored by Sen. Bryan B. Lujan, was approved on February 16, 1997. It aims to raise additional funds to finance the existing and proposed programs and projects of the highest student organization in school. The second resolution endorses to the school administration the preparation and pub­lication of a Student's Handbook. Approved on March 3, 1997, the resolution was authored by Sen. Mary Can Sta. Rufina. The proposed Student's Handbook will embody the norms of conduct of students in Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School. It will also provide students with basic infor­mation relevant to school policies and activi­ties. The Student Government of the school is headed by Noel Tolentino Jr. and Beulah Grace Portillo, respectively. Ruben L. de la rosa, 46 I
