The Glow 12 MARCH 1997 ) Holy Week rites bared To observe Holy Week, the Parish of San Nicolas de Tolentino in Cabatuan, Iloilo has lined up a series of activities from March 23-30. The activities will start on March 23, Palm Sunday. To mark the day commemorating the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ to Jerusalem, coconut fronds locally known as "ramos" will be blessed by Fr. Amadeo Escafian, the parish priest, at the bandstand at the town plaza at 7:00 a.m. From March 24 to 26 - Good Monday to Good Wednesday - there will be confessions and a religious conference at the parish church at 6:30 p.m. At 6:30 a.m. of March 27, Holy Thursday, there will be the blessing of the holy oil at the Jaro cathedral. At 5:00 p.m., a Holy Mass commemorating the last Supper of Jesus Christ will be held. This will be followed by a procession around the church and will wind up at the monument where the Holy Eucharist will be enshrined for the faithful to pay homage by way of keeping a vigil for the whole The Cabatuan public market is cur­rently undergoing reconstruction. The re­construction will cost the municipal gov­ernment some P1,5000,000. This was disclosed by Engr. Jose Nor­man Umadhay, the municipal planning and development coordinator. According to Engr. Umadhay, the P1.5 million appropriation for the recon­struction of the public market was taken from the 20% share of the Municipality of Cabatuan of its Internal Revenue Al­lotment (IRA) for 1996. The program of work on the public market includes four phases: the construc­tion of a water tank near the slaughter house, the roofing of two market sheds in the lower area of the market, the con­struction of a retaining wall at the upper rear portion of the market, and the con­struction of six stalls along Montafto­Fajardo-Casten road. night. Also on Holy Thursday, the Last Supper of Jesus Christ will be re-enacted at the community stage at 7:00 p.m. On March 28, Good Friday, a Way of the Cross will be held starting at 6:00 a.m. It will start from the church to Balic hill that has the semblance of Calvary where Jesus Christ was crucified. In the afternoon, ceremonies glorifying the Holy Cross will be held in the church, starting at 3:00 p.m. This will be followed by another Way of the Cross along the usual procession route around the poblacion. At 7:00 p.m., the "kapiya" and "pasyon" singing contests will be judged. The twin contests have become a tourist attraction of Cabatuan. On March 29, Holy Saturday, a Resurrection Mass will be held at 10:00 p.m. The week-long activities will be highlighted by the staging of "dampug" at ma' (7'o page 38) The water tank near the slaughter­house had already been put up. Two ad­ditional market sheds in the lower area of the market had already been roofed. Undergoing construction are six new market stalls. After their completion, the construction of a retaining wall at the up­per rear portion of the market will start. The retaining wall will be constructed to prevent the erosion of soil and to strengthen the foundation of a building to be constructed in the future. Engr. Umadhay also said that for 1997, the municipal government had ap­propriated more than P1 million from its 20% of IRA funds for the construction of a new building at the upper rear por­tion of the market. When realized, the new building will complete the quadran­gle of the public market. The renovation of Z~ (To page 38) 3 districts sponsor taekwondo tourney Three councilor districts in town spon­sored a taekwondo invitational tournament on March 16 at the covered gym in the town plaza starting at 1:00 p.m. The three councilor districts were Dis­trict 2 under Sangguniang Bayan member Valentin Sujede, District 8 under Sangguniang Bayan member Ramon Yee, and District 9 under Sangguniang Bayan mem­ber Remy Morales. The invitational tournament was partici­pated in by taekwondo players from San Miguel, Sta. - Barbara, and the host town Cabatuan. There were 27 matches during the tour­nament six in the girls division and 11 in the boys division. The team of Cabatuan in both boys and girls divisions was adjudged the champion. Alma Rosano of the host team was named "Best Fighter of the Tournament" in the girls division. Jerril Remirez, a 1996 Palarong Pambansa bronze medalist, also of the host team, was given the same distinction in the boys division. Prizes in the form of trophies and med­als were awarded to the winners. The tournament aimed to raise funds for the purchase of equipment for the Taekwondo Club of Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School, headed by Maribel Lacema, II-A. The adviser of the club is Mr. Melecio Balberde. Senior citizens report activities The Federation of Senior Citizens' ,As­sociation of the Philippines (FSCAP), Cabatuan, Iloilo Chapter made a report of some of their accomplishments for the year 1996. The report of achievements was pre­pared by Desiree Manzo, an employee of the Department of Social Welfare and De­velopment. According to the report, the senior citi­zens of the town made a series of tree-plant­ing activities in their respective barangay on October 1-5, 1996. Each was requested to. plant at least one permanent tree a day for five days. On October 6, 1996 a free medical-den­tal clinic was held at the covered gym~in the town plaza. Four doctors of medicine offered their free medical services: Dr. Restituta 1 Kilayko, Dr. Socrates Cuarte, Dr. Linda Jane B.
