America is lowered and the flag of the Philippines is raised to fly proudly alone over its blue skies, to signal the transfer or return of sovereignty. America leaves graciously, the Philippines becomes free again. A hiatus in the life of the Filipinos with combined pomp, solemnity and sentimentality. From 1946 to this date, we have been literally free, "the master of our fate, the captain of our soul." And, as the fiery Manuel L. Quezon in one of his inspired moments thunders for us that he prefer's "government run like hell by Filipinos to a government run like heaven by the American's. "Truly enough, we have experienced a number of hells. To mention a few: the Japanese occupation is hell; the martial rule of Marcos is hell; the unabated commission of graft and corr-uption in government is hell and the seemingly unsolvable dirt and anomalies in our so-called democratic elections is a continuing hell. There are more indeed. That the Filipino nation has survived, remains whole and intact and even stronger than ever is a tribute and a credit to the Filipino race, to you and to me, to us all.
