RESCUERS REACH CAPSIZED FERRY IN PHILIPPINES - 6/24/2008

The news continues to get worse in the Philippines. Divers have managed to get inside an upside-down ferry ... But have found no survivors -- instead only bodies trapped under the huge vessel. More than 800 people were on the ship when it capsized during a powerful typhoon over the weekend. Only 38 people are known to have survived. A Navy spokesman says when rescuers reached the ship -- most of the bodies were floating inside, apparently trapped when the ship suddenly tilted, then went belly up. Officials say some of the bodies under the ship were wearing life-vest. There are now concerns as to why the ship was allowed to sail in such fierce conditions.SOT: "The operator of the vessel should study carefully the typhoon movements to ensure that the vessel will not be within the danger area directly affected by the typhoon signals one, two, three and four within the danger sector until they reach their destinations." President Arroyo contends the ship should have never left in the storm -- which has flooded large sections of the Philippines triggering landslides and killing more than 100 people. While it is unlikely any survivors will be found -- families continue to hold out hope. Many gathered at the Manilla office of the vessel's owner -- demanding answers. ___ ___, The Associated Press.
